I’ve just returned from two blissful weeks in Hawaii, made all the more enjoyable knowing that life’s challenges were safely tucked away back in California. No dogs to walk, bills to pay, or future to figure out; nothing to do but enjoy this familiar paradise.
I also left behind my magnifying mirror and the critical voice that goes along with it. With my hair thickened by the humidity and blowing wildly in the trade winds, I was able to step back into the relaxed boho beach girl mode I enjoyed so much while living there. I felt beautiful and unencumbered in my loose dresses and colorful coral jewelry. I never once questioned if my short shorts and skirts were “age appropriate,” and didn’t concern myself if my swimsuit showed too much cellulite. When life is lived in the sunshine wrinkles and age spots are irrelevant. In the midst of all the island beauty, petty concerns about appearance feel out of place.
I don’t want to be that woman that judges herself so harshly, that views every “flaw” as something that either needs to be remedied or hidden. I want to feel free to celebrate my vibrant body, the thickness of my glorious hair, all of the health and beauty I am grateful was bestowed upon me.
The magnificence of our planet washes over you constantly in Hawaii. I breathed in the aquamarine of the water, the vastness of the cloud-filled sky, the drama of the mountains. Feeling the splendor that surrounds you allows you to grow more beautiful.
I was glad to have this lovely reminder.
I love the month of June, full of the tantalizing promise of pleasure. Every season is beautiful in its own way, but warm weather allows for a more sensual ease of dressing. Take in the colors: the blush of a peach, the lush green trees in full leaf, the ultramarine sky. When you catch yourself picking apart your appearance gently remind yourself that you don’t need to. Judging other women is really a mirror of your own insecurities, so be aware. And kind – to yourself and others. Let go a little! Feeling relaxed encourages creative discovery. A gorgeous summer is calling.
